My guess is that it was the Carpenter news peg and the "this genre is nameless" hook that got it so much attention so quickly -- it reads very differently if you just ignore it, tbh, though it took me a long conversation to get to that point. (But given how popular the article is, I guess my first impression wasn't widely shared!)
